Some call him the original sullen teenager...
Since his debut in 1951, Holden Caulfield — the funny, complex, wry protagonist of J.D. Salinger's classic The Catcher in the Rye — has given voice to generations of teenagers caught between childhood and the adult world.
One of the most censored books in recent U.S. history, The Catcher in the Rye is now a staple of many high school and college curricula. It's the coming-of-age story of 16-year-old Caulfield, who has flunked out of his prep school and is disillusioned with the world.
Your Assignment:
1. Select a song that captures one of the many complex aspects of Holden's personality. In your post, provide the lyrics to your selected song. As discussed in class, if there is a profanity in the song, please indicate and remove the word so that this maintains the academic tone of an extended classroom conversation.
2. Provide a one paragraph (approximately 100 words) explanation for your choice.
3. Do not use the same song as any of your classmates.
And I am all alone.
ReplyDeleteThere is no one here beside me.
And my problems have all gone.
There is no one to deride me.
But you got to have friends.
The feeling's oh so strong.
You got to have friends
to make that day last long.
I had some friends but they're gone,
somethin' came and took them away.
And from the dusk 'til the dawn
here is where I'll stay.
Standing at the end of the road, boys,
waiting for my new friends to come.
I don't care if I'm hungry or poor,
I'm gonna get me some of them.
'Cause you got to have friends.
Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, friends.
That's right you, oh you, yeah you,
I said you gotta have some friends,
I'm talkin' about friends, that's right, friends.
Friends, friends, friends.
I had some friends, oh, but they're all gone, gone,
someone came and snatched them away.
And from the dusk until the very dawn, you know,
here is where I gotta stay, here is where I gotta stay.
And I'm standing at the end of a real long road
and I'm waiting for my new friends to come.
I don't care if I'm hungry or freezin' cold,
I'm gonna get me some of them.
'Cause you gotta have friends,
that's right, friends, friends.
I gotta me my, I gotta me my, I gotta me my,
look around and see all of my friends.
Oh, friends, that's right, friends, friends,
friends, friends, friends, friends, oh,
friends, you gotta have friends . . .
The reason for why I picked this song was because I think this captures one of Holden's most important aspects. You would think that he doesn't want friends but I won't believe that because he was playing football with the two boys Robert Tichener and Paul Campbell. He's just an extremely depressed teenager who needs a friend. And even thought he always points out the bad in people, like Spencer and Selma, I believe he does this because he sees a reflection of what he sees in himself.

Yeah you, PMS
Like a b****
I would know
And you over think
Always speak
Cryptically
I should know
That you're no good for me

Cause you're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in then you're out
You're up then you're down
You're wrong when it's right
It's black and it's white
We fight, we break up
We kiss, we make up
(you) You don't really want to stay, no
(but you) But you don't really want to go-o
You're hot then you're cold
You're yes then you're no
You're in and you're out
You're up and you're down
We used to be
Just like twins
So in sync
The same energy
Now's a dead battery
Used to laugh ‘bout nothing
Now you’re plain boring
I should know that
You're not gonna change

Someone call the doctor
Got a case of a love bi-polar
Stuck on a roller coaster
Can't get off this ride
You change your mind
Like a girl changes clothes

“Hot n Cold”, by Katy Perry, is a perfect example of someone who is contradictory to their own self – just like Holden. Holden might start out by describing someone in a way that makes the reader think he dislikes them, and then say “but he wasn’t such a bad guy…” and go on to completely contradict his self. For example, when he begins to describe the headmaster’s daughter, Selma Thurmer, he makes her sound like the type of person one wouldn’t want to be associated with. However, afterwards he begins to explain why he likes her – which is surprising since it seemed as though he disliked her at first. On almost every page of the book, he makes a remark that contradicts the last, and even tends to confuse the reader. Holden is definitely a troubled person.

I chose this song because I feel like it is meant to be a description of Holden. I feel like there are many parts of this song that describe Holden. For example, when they say “Oh I'm an outsider outside of everything” they are describing Holden because he is an outsider. In the book, it talks about Holden being an outsider when everyone is watching the game but he is watching it from a hill. Also, this song it says “Everybody tried to put me, tried to put me down”. This reminds me of Holden because of the time when everybody was putting him down on the way back from New York with the fencing team.

ReplyDelete"The Story"
I've been thinking of everything
I used to want to be
I've been thinking of everything
Of me, of you and me
This is the story of my life
(These are the lies I have created)
This is the story of my life
(These are the lies I have created)
I'm in the middle of nothing
And it's where I want to be
I'm at the bottom of everything
And I finally start to leave
This is the story of my life
(These are the lies I have created)
This is the story of my life
(These are the lies I have created)
(I've created...)
And I swear to god
I'll find myself
In the end
And I swear to god
I'll find myself
In the end
And I swear to god
I'll find myself
In the end
In the end
And I swear to god
I'll find myself
In the end
In the end [x4]
This is the story of my life
These are the lies I have created
This is the story of my life
Thse are the lies I have created
(I've created)
This is the story of my life
(whispers)
These are the lies I have created....
I chose this song because the lyrics were completely similar with what just happened in terms of the characterization of Holden in the past few chapters. The song saying "these are the lies I've created" depicts when Holden says that he does lie all the time to get out of situations that are less than desirable. Spencer asks Holden if he will ever become something in the future and there is a part of these lyrics that almost reiterates what Holden might say by the lyrics going "and i swear to go i'll find myself in the end". This song overall represents the depressed lifestyle of Holden and how he hopes to possibly dig himself out but knows he has lied numerous times to get to this point of depression where he ended up in a psychiatric hospital.

I choose this song not only because I think its an amazing song but because the lyrics directly relate to Holden life in the few chapters we have read. I don’t think that there is a better song to describe Holden then this line” Pain I cant get enough, I rather fell pain then nothing at all… I use this line because he takes himself away from everyone else. By distancing himself he feels he has a safety shelter. He’s also found in a psychiatric hospital because he can’t find happiness but he forces himself in controversy or animosity towards himself.
ReplyDeleteIn class today Martha mentioned that Holden might be doing poorly in school on purpose. Considering that he only gets to see his parents when he’s in trouble. So the song I chose is based on what his emotions towards his family could possibly be. I know there are better songs out there but this one stuck to me. Don't get me wrong later into the story I could reflect back and say I was really off, but from what I realized while reading and in today's class discussion, his parents have been sending him from place to place and afraid to be seen with him because it might affect their image, but they never took the time to sit down and talk about what was really bothering him. Maybe that's all he really needs, maybe he just wants to feel loved and cared about which is also probably why he went to see Mr. Spencer and his wife. They show that they really care for him which is why he went to them to say goodbye. And the fact that he's in a psychiatric hospital and talking to a therapist shows that he was just waiting for someone to dedicate some of their time and just listened to what he had to say. I honestly believe that if his parents would have just sat down with him in a loving and not "phony" way, he would have told them all they wanted/needed to know. And at least with that they might be able to take bits and pieces of everything he says and come up with a solution that could possibly help not only him but there relationship too.

If I walk would you run
If I stop would you come
If I say you’re the one would you believe me
If I ask you to stay would you show me the way
Tell me what to say so you don’t leave me
The world is catching up to you
while you're running away to chase your dream
Its time for us to make a move cause we are asking one another to change
and maybe I’m not ready
CHORUS
but I'll try for your love
I can hide up above
I will try for your love
We’ve been hiding enough
If I sing you a song would you sing along
Or wait till I’m gone, oh how we push and pull
If I give you my heart would you just play the part
Or tell me it’s the start of something beautiful
Am I catching up to you
While you're running away, to chase your dreams
Its time for us to face the truth cause we are coming to each other to change
And maybe I’m not ready
CHORUS
But I'll try for your love
I can hide up above
I will try for your love
We’ve been hiding enough
I will try for your love
I can hide up above
If I walk would you run?
If I stop would you come?
If I say you’re the one would you believe me?

ReplyDeleteSend away for a priceless gift
One not subtle, one not on the list
Send away for a perfect world
One not simply, so absurd
In these times of doing what you're told
Keep these feelings, no one knows
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
I'm swimming through the ashes of another life
There's no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Send a message to the unborn child
Keep your eyes open for a while
In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else
There's a piece of a puzzle known as life
Wrapped in guilt, sealed up tight
What ever happened to the young man's heart
Swallowed by pain, as he slowly fell apart
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
I'm swimming through the ashes of another life
There's no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
Everyone's pointing their fingers
Always condemning me
And nobody knows what I believe
I believe
And I'm staring down the barrel of a 45,
I'm swimming through the ashes of another life
There's no real reason to accept the way things have changed
Staring down the barrel of a 45
I choose this song because Holden, in my opinion at least, is scared. I think he is afraid of what life has to offer, ans what it will bring him. He may be so terrified in fact, that he cannot bring himself to change, lest he set off some horrible chain of events. This relates to the song lyrics because the idea of staring into the barrel of a gun, let alone a very large bore gun, is quite scary. The song also mentions "...the young man's heart" which I think relates perfectly to Holden's cold personality, finding the cloud in every silver lining. I could almost see this song as having been written about Holden, his cold demeanor, and hidden fear.
ReplyDeleteI chose the song "Sometimes You Can'y Make It On Your Own" by U2.
ReplyDeleteTough, you think you've got the stuff
You're telling me and anyone
You're hard enough
You don't have to put up a fight
You don't have to always be right
Let me take some of the punches
For you tonight
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go in alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
We fight all the time
You and I... that's alright
We're the same soul
I don't need... I don't need to hear you say
That if we weren't so alike
You'd like me a whole lot more
Listen to me now
I need to let you know
You don't have to go it alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you when I don't pick up the phone
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
(This is it)
I know that we don't talk
I'm sick of it all
Can, you, hear, me, when, I, sing
You're the reason I sing
You're the reason why the opera is in me
Well hey now, still gotta let ya know
A house doesn't make a home
Don't leave me here alone
And it's you when I look in the mirror
And it's you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
Sometimes you can't make it
Best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can't make it on your own
I chose this song because I believe it accurately represents the struggles of the people who are trying to help Holden. Unfortunately, Holden, like the subject of the song, intentionally resists his numerous headmasters', his parents', and even Spencer's attempts to raise his grades. He perpetually believes that he is still in complete control of his own life and will be able to pull himself out of this slump anytime he wants. On the contrary, because of his depression, he feels no need to do so. He simply resents the world that refuses to accept him while making little effort to be accepted, just as the subject of the song is most likely too proud to ask for help when they are struggling. Finally, there is only a certain point to which people like Spencer and Holden's parents will care: after that point Holden, if he continues the way he is going, will surely fall. This, I believe, is why Holden becomes so uncomfortable in Spencer's home when he is surrounded by the marks of old age: he fears his own future and wonders how he will manage, just as the vocalist of the song wonders how he will go on if the person dear to his refuses help.

ReplyDeleteThe reason why i decided to choose this particular song is because i feel that Holden builds a wall between him and the people he meets. Like it says on this song, "I’m in the shadows in the corner of my room
this my new hideaway." This describes Holden significantly since Holden lives in his own world where everyone is phony and no one deserves his fool attention.
I also found it interesting how the song says, "I climb the wall, I’m too high and now I’d die from the fall before the waters to our knees". This can interpret what the future may hold for Holden if he keeps closing doors for himself. Once he tries, it will be too late. Maybe then he will need "good luck".
I swear to tell the truth
the whole truth and nothing but
Yes
hey
I am the maniac
I am the ghoul
I’m in the shadows in the corner of my room
this my new hideaway
this my tomb
this is my coffin
this is my place for unrulyness, no worries
I love the darkness yeah
I like to marry it
it is my cloak, it is my shield, it is my cape
I love the dark, maybe we can make it darker
give me a marker
I am the maniac
I am the maniac
I am the maniac
[Cage:]
I am the maniac, I am the fool
I found a monster in me when I lost my cool
it lives inside of me eating whats in its web
put black spray paint on my windows during the day
wanna spend time with it, I think I’m losing it
or I found it and I’m using it
I wear my shades at night so I can look in the abyss
I see something in nothingness if you could picture this
put black holes in my jar lid
I climb the wall, I’m too high and now I’d die from the fall
before the waters to our knees
we can’t climb on the tree’s wash away
and you and I are the disease
I am the maniac
I am the maniac

ReplyDeleteWhy do you build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup baby just to
let me down (Let me down)
And mess me around
And then worst of all (Worst of all)
You never call baby
When you say you will (Say you will)
But I love you still
I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup
Don't break my heart
I'll be over at ten
You tell me time and again
But you're late
I wait around and then
I went to the door
I can't take any more
It's not you
You let me down again
Baby Baby
Try to find a little time
And I'll make you happy
I'll be home
I'll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.
Why do you build me up....
To you I'm a toy
But I could be the boy
You adore
If you'd just let me know
Although you're untrue
I'm attracted to you
All the more
Why do I need you so Baby Baby.....
ooh ooh ooh
Why do build me up .....
I felt as though this song portrays Holden’s desire to be accepted and loved and it seems to express his inner turmoil. He is torn because he doesn’t want to want people but he knows that he needs them. Holden isn’t looking for a woman in this case, though. I think in this song Holden’s “Buttercup” is his parents because his parents continually get his hopes up and then tear them down again and he is getting tired of trying to vie for their attention.

under that's a full back tattoo of your powder blue fixie
and it's not because you like these things: it's a joke only hipsters see.
I wish I'd known you looked at love with that same philosophy
I have been such a fool how did I not see
that you only love me ironically
You love my nerdy glasses -- but I need them to see
and it's not a matter of image that I got a job at the library
no I actually like star trek that was not supposed to be funny
and I'm not pretending when I act like I don't have any money
I have been such a fool how did I not see
that you only love me ironically
this realization came after a time of great reflection
noticing all you own and do has a strange off-tilt perfection
how do I fit in to your "ugly stuff" obsession
I am just an accessory in your irony collection
I have been such a fool how did I not see
that you only love me ironically
I'm not going to tell you I'm leaving -- it is long past time to desert
and I can't look into the sad sad eyes of the kittens on your t-shirt
without any real feelings I know you won't be hurt
call me up if you find the real world and finally want to convert
I have been such a fool how did I not see
that you only love me ironically
I think this song describes the way Holden always contradicts himself. The person the song is directed towards seems to be all over the place, and so is Holden. Holden never seems to pick a direction to move in, or take a position on anything. The way he talks, saying something, then just as quickly negating it, is similar to the way the person in this song has a style that is a strange mix of many different attributes. This person and Holden both seem like they are not sure what they are doing or where they are going. They also both don't seem to care much about other people. So far, Holden only really cares about Spencer, and he doesn't concern himself with other people. The person the song is directed towards "won't be hurt" by the person who wants to end their relationship. This song captures some of Holden's main attributes.

ReplyDelete"Somewhere I Belong"
(When this began)
I had nothing to say
And I get lost in the nothingness inside of me
(I was confused)
And I let it all out to find
That I’m not the only person with these things in mind
(Inside of me)
But all that they can see the words revealed
Is the only real thing that I’ve got left to feel
(Nothing to lose)
Just stuck, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own
[Chorus]
I wanna heal, I wanna feel what I thought was never real
I wanna let go of the pain I’ve felt so long
(Erase all the pain till it’s gone)
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m close to something real
I wanna find something I’ve wanted all along
Somewhere I belong
And I’ve got nothing to say
I can’t believe I didn’t fall right down on my face
(I was confused)
Looking everywhere only to find
That it’s not the way I had imagined it all in my mind
(So what am I)
What do I have but negativity
’Cause I can’t justify the way, everyone is looking at me
(Nothing to lose)
Nothing to gain, hollow and alone
And the fault is my own, and the fault is my own
[Repeat Chorus]
I will never know myself until I do this on my own
And I will never feel anything else, until my wounds are healed
I will never be anything till I break away from me
I will break away, I'll find myself today
[Repeat Chorus]
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
I wanna heal, I wanna feel like I’m somewhere I belong
Somewhere I belong
I believe this is a great song portraying Holdens life. i say this because the title of this song is called, "Somewhere I Belong," It seems like Holden doesnt belong anywhere. He got kicked out of several schools, ontop of that he goes to private school and he still got kicked out. It also seems like where ever he stays, he doesnt like it there. However he wants to fit in to the society.I believe that if he actually tries to make friends he will succeed, but i think he is just scared of failing at another thing, or just failing in general. As you look at it his life is full of failures

I think this is a good song that portrays Holden. The first part perfectly mirrors Holden talking to the therapist in the beginning of the book. "I am one of those melodramatic fools
neurotic to the bone" states that alot of depressing/crazy things happened in his life. The next part of the song can describe how Holden has a complex mind. One could say that "Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me" shows how Holden always contradicts himself. Overall, this song does a good job of highlighting Holden's main traits.

I choose this song because no one really knows what Holden's live is like. In the song Simple Plan says "to be hurt, to feel lost, to be left out in the dark." This reminded me about Holden because he is hurt and since he's always moving and getting expelled from school he feels lost. Also, when Simple Plan says" Are you sick of feeling so left out?
Are you desperate to find something more?
Before your life is over
Are you stuck inside a world you hate?
Are you sick of everyone around?
With their big fake smiles and stupid lies
While deep inside you're bleeding
No you don't know what it's like
When nothing feels all right
You don't know what it's like
To be like me." Holden I feel like is someone that feels left out. He is always by himself like at the football game at Pencey. In addition, he seems like he hates the world he is in because he's always lying to people, and criticizing people.

But it's only me, I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'til then I walk alone
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah,
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What's fucked up when everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating

I chose the song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. I think this song strongly represents Holden. It repeats the phrase "I walk alone," to me it seems as though he's a very lonely person. He is continuously removing himself from the crowd. Also, Holden seems to have given up on all his dreams and aspirations, which is what this song is about. He thinks he's the only one who can help himself, which also goes along with the theme of the song.
I took her out it was Friday night
ReplyDeleteI wore cologne to get the feeling right
We started making out and she took off my pants
But then I turned on the TV
And that's about the time that she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when you're 23
And are still more amused by TV shows
What the hell is ADD?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?
Then later on, on the drive home
I called her mom from a pay phone
I said I was the cops
And your husband's in jail
This state looks down on sodomy
And that's about the time that ***** hung up on me
Nobody likes you when your 23
And are still more amused by prank phone calls
What the hell is caller ID?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?
And that's about the time she walked away from me
Nobody likes you when your 23
And you still act like you're in Freshman year
What the hell is wrong with me?
My friends say I should act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?
That's about the time she broke up with me
No one should take themselves so seriously
With many years ahead to fall in line
Why would you wish that on me?
I never want to act my age
What's my age again?
What's my age again?
I chose the song "What's My Age Again?" by Blink 182. It seems that this song strongly reflects Holden's own 'age crisis.' He is a teenager, and like the song, he doesn't want to act his age. Rather, he strives to become an adult through drinking, smoking, lies, etc. Also, like the person in the song, he does act rather childish in a quirky way, which may be a huge part of the reason that he doesn't get along well with most people.
